Sleeps:
8/9 + cot

Our largest and potentially oldest Lake District cottage sleeping 9 + child + baby and perfect for large families and groups!

The cottage is named after the nearby Scafell Pike and is Graded 4 Star Gold.

This was the former main barn at Bridge End Farm, with the full height barn doors which are now its double glazed majestic entrance. The uppermost part of the windows reaches the first floor twin bedroom, where, if you look closely, you will spot the secret floor level spy hole!

The downstairs of the cottage is consequently bathed in natural light and the ceiling centrally remains full height, with the bedrooms located to either side. The first floor bedroom mentioned above has been maintained as a galleried feature of the cottage in order to preserve the downstairs expanse and does of course have curtains to maintain privacy.

Scafell Cottage also has a ground floor bedroom and bathroom, making it ideal for disabled guests or those with limited mobility.

“I took my family to stay at Scafell Cottage in Boot from 24th to 31st October this year and we had the most wonderful holiday.  We all thought the cottage was absolutely stunning and so cosy and warm and exceptionally well equipped with everything needed to make our holiday even better. (Even to the lovely idea of providing two cuddly teddy bears on the twin beds for the two older children).  The weather on the first day was a 'bit to be desired' but we were so comfortable and cosy the rain didn't bother us one tiny bit. Even the three children of 7, 5 and 2 years of age were happy to stay in and play.  They thought the cottage was fabulous and want to go back next year. Bob the caretaker was very pleasant indeed and the pub in the village - well what can I say - we were never away!! You have done a beautiful job with those cottages Greg, the area is outstandingly lovely and the Ratty railway a real treat for the children. We will certainly want to come and stay again and thank you from my family and myself for making our holiday so relaxing.”

Named after Scafell, the second highest mountain in England and neighbour to England’s highest, Scafell Pike, Scafell Cottage presents itself as the largest of our cottages and potentially the oldest, as according to a National Park archaeologist, the barns may have preceded the building of The Farmhouse by up to 100 years!

Scafell Cottage is highly recommended for large groups or families, as well as parties with members who may have limited mobility or require ground floor facilities. It is delightfully open plan with a good flow for families and groups. The children often sit playing their games on the carpeted area between the lounge and kitchen leaving the adults free to relax on the sofas. As well as the full Sky TV package found in all of the Lake District cottages, Scafell has many novels to choose from and there is a CD player, ipod dock and children’s games to entertain everyone also. There is plenty of space for everyone to sit together at mealtimes, whilst there is also privacy, generated by the layout of the bedrooms.  The backdoors from the kitchen open out onto the lawned paddock affording lovely fell views so step out of an evening and light the barbecue to enjoy dining al fresco.

"My family and I stayed at Scafell Cottage which is another of the cottages near Wastwater, in Eskdale, Cumbria, in October 2010. We also stayed there in Oct. 2009 and are returning again this year in October. We had the most wonderful holiday. When we first walked into Scafell Cottage (which sleeps 9 people very comfortably) the welcome was just amazing. The lighting and warmth after a long day's travel was so cosy and warm we just loved it on sight. Scafell Cottage is very romantic and quite historical and it is also very peaceful. It has a large garden for children to play and although we haven't yet stayed in the Summer I would imagine it is glorious in that garden on a warm Summer night. The cottage is in a lovely little village called Boot and there are a couple (or so) of very good pubs nearby where you can just pop in with the family and have a great meal. You are so near you can even bring the desserts back with you if you wish! It is also a beautiful area for couples too as there are quite a few other cottages nearby sleeping different numbers of people. It is very near Wastwater and all the beautiful walks in the Lake District and after a trek on the hills at the end of an October day I must say it is heartwarming to come back to your welcoming and warm cottage. It is also very near to the Ratty Railway which children love and not far away is Muncaster Castle which is a superb place to visit and the family there organise very interesting things for families to do, especially at Halloween with their creepy ghost walks! Fabulous! Nothing is too much trouble for Greg and his staff and I only wish I had the time to go more than just once a year. Lovely!"

"Just come back from a superb 10 day holiday at Scafell Cottage. The house was perfectly equipped and we were met by the owner who proceeded to take an hour out to show us the best walks, fishing and things to do with the kids. The property is comfortably furnished (would have loved a bigger double bed and a real fire but they were the only minor gripes!) and led out to a large open plan garden which is shared with the other 3 cottages and lead down to a stream where our kids (boys aged 4, 9 and 12) spent many a happy hour. The cottage leads out onto several walks direct from the doorstep as well as easy hopping (between 50m and 200m) distance to 2 great pubs with another 2 superb ones less than a mile away. It's close to Wastwater which is at the bottom of the magnificent Scafell Pike which we climbed one day (allow 5 hours with kids and not under 7!) Wastwater itself is one of the less touristy lakes and is stunning. All in all couldn't recommend both the property and area enough and can't wait to go back."

"A beautiful cottage in a perfect setting with everything you could need supplied and spotlessly clean. Scafell was absolutely perfect for our family of 9 and we all felt so at home there. It was comfortable, cosy and homely. The teenagers were initially aghast to find there was no signal for their iphones etc but were so happily occupied cycling, walking and yes they were even swimming up at the pool by the Mill, that the phones were soon forgotten about and we had more conversation with them than we have had for ages! Ann and Bob the caretakers are lovely people and so helpful. Boot is the perfect location for walking, cycling or just lazing about by the river. Local food was first class."

Great location, lovely village, comfortable cottage. We stayed in Scafell with a large group of both friends and family, and the weather was glorious! After a day's walking on the fells we enjoyed a barbeque dinner most evenings in the lovely garden, by the river. One day we even walked further up the valley and took a quick dip in the River Esk - it was the perfect way to cool down on a hot day! There was plenty to do for the children too and they loved going up and down the valley on the La'al Ratty steam train. Enjoyed a hearty meal at the Brook House Inn down the road, and sampled the local ales. Wouldn't mind returning for the Boot Beer festival next year. The cottage is full of beams, very well equipped and the open plan layout was perfect for our group.
