With its attractive open-plan interior, Hardknott Cottage is superbly suited to those wishing to either share every moment or simply keep an eye or ear out for the youngster! The downstairs living area offers an enticing escape from the noise of cities and their suburbs, with its 3ft thick pink granite stone walls, sheltering you from the outside world. We have taken extra care to preserve the original layout of the barn, which was formerly a byre, where livestock were housed.

We have paid special attention to keeping the rooms much as they were when they were built around 500 years ago. The bedroom has been created out of the former storage area that overlooked the byre and the bathroom downstairs formed within what was once a subtle store room on the side. You will also find the back of the full height chimney breast from Wastwater Cottage protruding through the width of the 3 foot thick wall into the galleried bedroom above.

The cottage is named after Hardknott Fell, on which both Hardknott Roman Fort and England’s steepest pass are located. Similarly, Hardknott Cottage, your next holiday hideaway, has a lofty high ceiling and a back door opening onto our lawned paddock with lovely fell views. Open and airy on the inside, yet private and sheltered from the distractions of modern day life, with its solid stone walls and uncontested fell views, you won’t be settling for second best when staying here!

"We had a wonderful holiday in Eskdale and Hardknott Cottage was looking very good - very clean and the improvements you have made this year are impressive. We followed your example, and did Bowfell and Esk Pike, descending from Esk Pike to Lingcove Bridge - a path did eventually emerge on the descent!"

Excellent location, pubs, & good walks nearby, superb accommodation - I have just reviewed another cottage (Stanley Ghyll) which is in the same fantastic location - so i won't repeat myself too much on the location side of this one. This is the first cottage we stayed in in Eskdale - and clearly we liked the location and cottages so much we came back only a few weeks later! This particular cottage, Hardknott, is fine, but we did prefer Stanley Ghyll cottage. Just need to mind your head on the way in!. As with the other cottage we stayed in, the place was very clean, well organised and had everything we needed (I think the only other thing I brought the second time was my egg poacher!). Great place for walks - you can get access to the "regular" lakes via the hardknott pass which is kinda fun but you need to drive carefully - you can always use another route if you prefer. Plenty of pubs nearby with interestingly named ales and good food. So - what's not to like?

We stayed in Hardknott Cottage for two weeks in June. The service was excellent. The property owner was staying next door and was very helpful in making our stay as pleasant as possible. He knows the Lake District and his recommendations about places to visit were very valuable. The cottage had everything we needed. The mountains are at your doorstep and wonderful walks (climbing and easy) can start at the location. Hardknott Pass (not in bad weather) makes it easy to visit the Western side of the Lake District.

Absolutely amazing, the best honeymoon a couple could ask for! Well what can I say, from the very first email enquiry to Greg and the very prompt and informative reply, I knew this was the place to spend our honeymoon. I guess I just had a feeling and it is true what they say that first impressions are lasting. On arrival at the cottages I couldn't believe how beautiful the cottages were and the valley they are situated in is breathtaking. Hardknott is so quaint, with exposed beams and lovely little fire to relax in front of. It is spotlessly clean and the gardens are beautiful and we had our own private picnic area to relax in with a bottle of wine. The food in the local Inns is very good also and the locals are all very friendly. A special thank you to Bob for being so friendly and welcoming! There are lots of things to do and see close by, I can recommend Wastwater Lake with the outstanding views, Ravenglass steam railway that is only 5 minutes' walk from the cottage and Muncaster Castle. All in all a fantastic stay and we will definitly be back for our 1st wedding anniversary and I cannot wait. Thanks again!
