Lake District Cottages 4 and 5 star rated

Named after the Stanley Ghyll 60ft waterfall, a pleasant walk from Bridge End Farm, in like manner, this cottage is a unique feature of the Western Lakes with very few detached cottages for two. Slightly secluded, in the village of Boot, Stanley Ghyll is a favourite of many of our guests, many of whom come back for their holiday year in, year out, some even twice a year, to experience the striking contrast in Lake District scenery between the seasons! Stanley Ghyll Cottage also has a ground floor bedroom and bathroom, making it suitable for disabled guests or those with limited mobility.

"Stanley Ghyll was exactly what the doctor ordered! Relaxed, refreshed and calm once again! Ready to charge off the starting blocks in the big smoke rat race. Truly spectacular scenery and we will definitely be back!"

The cottage has a large, light downstairs entrance and an unexpected upstairs snug complete with new sofa. This room was formerly the bothy or workroom of Arthur Irving, a previous owner who was renowned for his craftsmanship and for carving beautiful wooden walking sticks with handles shaped from rams’ horns. The downstairs bedroom has a kingsize bed nestled beneath the beams. The exquisite marble shower room has a large walk in shower cubicle, basin and toilet. A stunning new kitchen has also just been fitted in early 2018, so come and be one of the first to use it!

Adjacent to the cottage is a very pretty, peaceful walled garden with marvellous fell views, in which you can enjoy afternoon tea with homemade cake from the Eskdale Stores or an evening BBQ with Woodall’s range of Cumberland Sausages, the Queen’s suppliers!

Accommodation Summary:

“We stayed in Stanley Ghyll Cottage in Boot for a week from May 27th this year. It was our honeymoon. The cottage was beautiful and the surrounding scenery was stunning. Everything was extremely well organised and we had a wonderful time. We feel extremely lucky to have stayed in such a fantastic place and we hope to return to Stanley Ghyll in the future.”

“Just to let you know that we both had a great stay at Stanley Ghyll cottage last week. What a perfect way to celebrate our wedding anniversary (28 years). It was our first visit to the Lake District and found the cottage to be the perfect location to explore the surrounding area. Many thanks to you and all your staff for making our stay the best. We are already planning to return again next year.”

"We had a very pleasant week in the beautiful surroundings of Eskdale. The cottage was comfortable with all that we needed and full of rustic charm. We particularly liked the exposed beams and internal stonework. We were able to do a number of challenging and interesting walks from the doorstep of the cottage, which also had its own well maintained attractive gardens for relaxing in. The staff were welcoming and helpful and all in all we had an excellent holiday at Stanley Ghyll Cottage."

"We had stayed in another cottage a few weeks previously (Hardknott Cottage) and clearly enjoyed that so much we came back again! However, this time we wanted to try a slightly different cottage, so we went for Stanley Ghyll. I have stayed in the lakes several times over the years, but always in the main areas, on the eastern or nothern side. I wanted to take my girlfriend somewhere different so i decided on Eskdale which is an area i had never experienced before. I must say that i prefer this area now, since it's got everything you want; the "Lakes experience" - but not in the mad crowds of somewhere like Keswick. The cottage itself is fantastic as it’s a secluded detached building. The cottages are set in a hamlet called Boot, which has a pub 2 minutes walk away, and another one about 3 minutes away from that! They do fantastic food and beer. There are plenty of other choices too. Regarding things to do; of course there are walks, there's the beach not far away, there's a bunch of hills to climb and Scafell Pike is close by if you feel like climbing a mountain (which we did and it was very satisfying). While we were there we also popped into Gosforth and had a pottery lesson which was good fun too. I think that the high quality of these cottages + the superb location offer an ideal experience to "get away from it all" without having to book flights, or worry about passports, or whether you're carrying over 100ml of liquid! This is only my second ever review on Trip Advisor and i only write something if a place has had a big impact on me - in this case it was a very positive one."

"Couldn't fault anything about our stay at Stanley Ghyll cottage in Boot. The accomodation is clean, comfortable and in such beautiful surroundings. Boot feels miles away from the outside world but the cottages are very close to two great hostelries that are both friendly and provide good food and ales. Loads of great walks to enjoy and the scenery is stunning. Don't miss the Ravenglass/Eskdale railway which is ten minutes walk from cottages. Enjoyed our stay so much we have booked again for this November in two of the bigger cottages so we can share our experience with a big group of our friends."

We have stayed at Stanley Ghyll Cottage on many occasions over the past four years as we love it so much. The cosy cottage feels welcoming as soon as you enter and has every facility you need as well as a few added personal touches. It is the perfect place for two people to enjoy a romantic and charming getaway. The location is great for many walks and the views are beautiful. The staff that we have met over the past few years have been extremely friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. We hope to keep visiting Stanley Ghyll Cottage for many years to come as it is always a pleasure and we can guarantee a lovely place to stay.
