A delicate one bedroom cottage, self catering Eskdale, bordered by the river and nestled beneath the mountains perfect for couples. Yes this is the cottage behind the bridge!

Only a few metres away from the gushing Whillan Beck and the sixteenth century packhorse bridge that crosses it, if you love to wake to the sound of the stream and running water, then this cottage is the one for you! Jump out of bed and head straight over the bridge for a morning hike up the fells without encountering a single soul. In contrast, head out the other direction in the evening and find yourself at one of the local village inns for a pint and why not try your hand at the local pub quiz!

"Just a quick note to say how much we enjoyed our stay at Whillan Beck Cottage last week. The setting was truly idyllic and the cottage extremely comfortable and equipped with everything we needed. All contact we had with Select Cottages – the office, housekeeper and gardener – was very friendly and helpful. This, combined with glorious weather and good walking conditions, made this holiday one of our best ever and we certainly hope to come back again in the not too distant future!"

Whillan Beck Cottage has undergone a transformation through time; it was once a stable, then a wool shed, before it became an office, and now it is a cosy cottage! The smallest of our one bedroom Lake District cottages, yet with easy access to the river and the fells, this is a first-class choice for your upcoming enchanting weekend away.

"This is our 6th visit to the cottages and 50 years visiting Eskdale!  Whillan Beck cottage is most delightful and comfortable.  We have everything we need and more.  We look forward to our next visit."

"We just wanted to say thankyou!  Our little cottage Whillan Beck has been just perfect, more than we expected and we had a wonderful week in Boot.  We will definitely pass on our recommendations to family and friends and no doubt we will also see you again in the future."

I had two glorious weeks at Whillan Beck cottage, which is every bit as pretty as the pictures show. The spacious back garden, with the beck running along its edge, was a pleasant surprise, perfect for relaxing after a day on the fells and to enjoy your morning breakfast in. New as I was to the Lake District area, I found the cottage was perfectly situated for visitors that want to have immediate access to both fell walking as well as village life with several nice pubs within walking distance. The service given by the manager and the rest of the staff at Select Cottages was above and beyond what I expected, and they made me feel both welcomed and well taken care of throughout my stay. Their suggestions on where to walk and what to see & do in the Eskdale area were particularly appreciated by me. The cottage itself was so cute, nicely heated and the choice of furniture and textiles gives it a luxurious but still cosy feel on both floors. The soothing sound of the beck right outside the bedroom window enhanced the pleasant indoor experience. It was great to be able to step out the bedroom door in the mornings, sit in the doorway and wake up to the sight and sound of the old Mill situated across the lovely old stone bridge. Although a car might make it easier to get around Eskdale, I was able to travel all the way to Boot by train. The Ravenglass to Dalegarth railway also made it easy to explore the area beyond walking distance from Boot, when you need a day's rest from walking. Eskdale and Boot is a wonderful place to be and even after a two week stay, I still want to come back and see much more of it.

We stayed at Whillan Beck between Christmas 2010 and New Year (we had stayed at Bridge End Farmhouse next door some years ago so knew it would be good). We had a great time. The cottage is small but perfectly formed for two people and was cosy and welcoming despite the subzero temperatures outside! It had everything we needed, was well looked after and clean. There is also a laundry room in a nearby outbuilding which is handy after those mountain walks. The views up onto the fells are lovely and you can also hear the sound of the small Beck running which is relaxing. Boot itself is a tiny hamlet but is well served by 2/3 pubs within easy walking distance. The location is ideal for those wishing to explore the outdoors and there is excellent walking straight out from the cottage and onto the Fells and over to Wastwater, up Hardknott pass to Hardknott fort or to Eskdale Green. We will definitely go back again.

We stayed at Whillan Beck cottage for the last week in July 2011. We’re really fussy about the cleanliness of holiday accommodation, so were really pleased with the excellent standard we found at Whillan Beck, it was very clean and well maintained. The cottage is small but well laid out and ideal for two people. It’s located towards the end of a no through road so there is no noise from passing traffic. There are occasional visitors on foot to the small watermill at the other side of the bridge and walkers heading towards Wasdale which is some five miles away over Eskdale moor. If you’ve had a long day on the fells and don’t fancy preparing dinner, there are two pubs within five minutes walk of the cottage that do meals. If the sun is shining there’s an enclosed lawned area to the rear of the cottage with seating, add a good book, the sound of the near by beck and a glass of wine perhaps and it makes for a pleasant relaxing afternoon/evening. On our next visit to the Eskdale area we will definitely be looking to stay here again.
